The two newest players in the U.S.-Colombia market will be low-cost carriers Spirit and JetBlue, which would be able to launch their services to the South American country in April, per a tentative order from the U.S. Transportation Dept. that also saw Delta and Continental winning additional frequencies to boost their current offering in the market.

American would lose seven of its U.S.-Colombia frequencies as a result of the order — the rights were added to the April pot, which was split between the low-cost carriers. The airline recently announced it would suspend the operation of the frequencies, which are being used in the Miami-Bogota market, on April 7 (DAILY, Feb. 29). DOT’s decision, however, stipulates that the carrier “can continue to market, sell and operate” the frequencies until April 1. A finalized order will likely iron out the differences between the carrier’s and the department’s planned end dates.

In addition to the application from American seeking to keep its frequencies, DOT rejected US Airways’ new-entrant application for the Charlotte-Bogota market. The department said that while the service could offer some competitive benefits to the market by establishing a new gateway at Charlotte, “the Charlotte-Bogota O&D market is small, indeed, by far the smallest proposed in this proceeding. The O&D traffic to Colombia from Central and South Florida, i.e., from the markets that would be served by the other new entrants JetBlue and Spirit, is substantially greater than that from Charlotte.” The airline’s suggestion that its Charlotte connections would help it maintain the service also gave DOT pause, as it said the one-stop connections to Colombia are already in play in the market and “the limited historic Colombia traffic from those points at which US Airways would be offering first-time connecting service...would not represent the optimal use of these frequencies.”

Delta could launch its daily New York Kennedy-Bogota services as soon as the order is finalized. JetBlue’s daily Orlando-Bogota offering and Spirit’s Fort Lauderdale-Bogota services could start on or after April 1, and Continental’s Houston-Bogota services could come online on Oct.

A Jetblue vai voar Bogotá/Orlando.
